Calumite is now accepted throughout the world as a glass batch raw material for the manufacture of soda lime silica and similar glasses. A by  product from steel industry, the blast furnace slag is dried crushed, pulverized  and screened then stored onto giant stock piles.

Calumite is a glassy type material and is a source of various major glass oxides such as alumina, magnesia, calcia and silica. As such it can partially reduce conventional glass batch raw materials such as Sand, Limestone, Dolomite, Clay, Feldspar, Nepheline Syenite etc. This together with the fuel benefits can significantly reduce overall running costs.
Usage in glass is relatively small and is often expressed as a percentage or ratio of total dry sand weight added to the glass batch. The amount of addition can depend many things such as  glass chemistry, desired glass color, available batch oxidizing agents, chemistry of other sourced batch raw material. Typical Calumite concentrations range from 6 to 20% by weight of dry sand. Particle size very much depends on the calumite processing conditions such as classifier speed and rejection limit. Generally speaking there will be only one or two grades of Calumite available for sale.
Benefits include improved glass melting, reduced seed counts [i.e. minute air bubbles entrapped within the glass melt], improved environmental emissions [i.e. due to less carbon dioxide and Nitrogen oxides being lost during glass melting process], reduced fuel costs [due to the use of a glassy material], reduced batch stones [i.e. un-melted sand grains], lower glass batch cost, faster batch melt out rates, reduced refractory wear and improved redox [i.e. oxidization/reduction] and glass color control.
